Brushed trim always carries brush marks. Sprayed trim does not. On new millwork or a full repaint, spraying is what separates a good job from an obviously repainted one.
We mask the room properly, spray with fine-finish tips, and use hardening enamels that resist scuffing.
Old varnished trim must be degreased, scuff-sanded and sealed with a bonding or shellac primer. Skipping that step is why so many DIY trim repaints peel at the edges within a year.
Semi-gloss is the traditional choice; a satin waterborne alkyd is currently the best balance of hardness, flow and modern look.
Yes. Full masking makes it entirely separable, and we often spray trim first then cut walls to it.
